2003 TT Quatro

My TT stopped going into first gear. I assumed the linkage needed to be adjusted so I did so as the service manual directed. Now I can't get it to go in 6th gear. I adjusted it correctly over 20 times moving the cables just millimeters each time. It either gets reverse and gears 1-4 without 5 and 6, reverse with gears 2-6 and no first gear, or reverse and gears 1-5 without 6th. Adjusting it in the correct order and position with locking pins in place leaves me with no 5th and 6th gear every time. Any suggestions would be great.
