Look how sh!tty our stock mufflers are. (bunch of pics)
I got a little bored the other night at work, and this thing was going in the scrap barrel anyway, so I figured I'd do a little exploratory surgery.

Double walled.

Fiberglass packing

Steel packing underneath the fiberglass.

One end of the muffler, other side looks the same

Perforated tube under the steel packing

Huge restriction here

Total view of everything opened up.
Comes into the muffler, 'T's and heads to the ends of the muffler thru a solid tube. From the ends it does a 180° turn back thru the perf. tube to exit on the side opposite from where it originally started.
Another restriction I didn't show is where the pipe exits the muffler. It's 2.5" stainless pipe starting about 1" outside the muffler, but where it's welded to the muffler, it's necked down to roughly 2" diameter. Interestingly, it's more like 2 3/8ths pipe coming into the muffler, which will make things slightly interesting when I try to line up a 2.5" pipe to weld the stock tips back on with the DOM pipe I have coming. I can do it, it'd just be easier if it were the same size, for alignment purposes.

really? missed those pics, when was that?
Oh yeah, I weighed it too, 35lbs including tips.
Tips, cut from where they exit the muffler, are approx. 2lbs each.
