Middle Display - Fragmented Pixelation
2002 Audi TT
The middle display on the instrument panel cannot be viewed with any degree of clarity due to a fragmented pixelation appearance. I cannot view any clear figures, symbols or information on this display. The centre display is scrambled with dis-pixelation.
I have read that there was a world class action settlement form Audi on these clusters for a period of 6 years from new and ended in 2008.
I have read most of the 'remove panel' - and i can perform this task quite easily.
Once the panel is removed, what needs to be done to repair this central display - besides sending it off to a repairer?
How would i know if the LCD screen needs to be replaced?
How would i know if i need to replace cable ribbons?

I have personally looked into this as my 2001 225 is going through the same issue even after the dash has been previously replaced by Audi (a long time ago however).
Honestly, if you are comfortable with soldering connections to a logic board the width of a pin needle while other connections of the same width are less than millimeters apart, then you can replace it. But it is very difficult to do free-hand and I have personally decided to let it go.
You will need to replace the entire LCD and ribbon cable which are soldered directly to the clusters logic board. There are some services which can repair it for around $150 if I remember correctly, if you send in the entire cluster (which isn't bad considering the LCD itself is around $50-$60).
Good Luck!
