Default need help on what model i should get... 16yo

hey, im 16 years old in D.C.
anyways, im looking to get my first car, although ive had my liscense for about a year. I want to buy a stick shift (No Automatic is not a choice for me). Okay, so, my friend is good w/ cars and he said i should get an a4 (S) series. But I was looking at the 2000 TT.... i Can Only afford a year 2000 model of either b/c i am only going to be able to pay about 12-14k at the most since im just 16. so obviously it's going to be used. I noticed dat the s4 is more expensive for obvious reasons with the horsepower and liters etc.... plus i think its 6 speed.

To get to the point, anyone have recomendations on wheter i should get a TT 2000, or an s4 2000. I beleive the TT 2000 looks a whole lot better inter and exter. than the s4 does, although s4 newer models look great

Thanks for the input... hopefullyI can get a car soon.

if you can barely afford to buy one I wouldn't... you should have some kind of $$ cushion to maintain afterwards.

also I think a test drive of the S4 and TT are in order for you to decide.

The question is whether or not you can afford the insurance and the maintenance. TTs along with most European cars are expensive to maintain. If you don't do your own work plan on anywhere between $1000 to $2000 a year in maintenance cost. A 2000 TT will likely need a timing belt right off the bat (and every 60,000 miles) unless you can verify that it had been done. Read through the FAQ at the top of the forum, there is a link to a good buyers guide on VWVortex that has a lot of information about the various model years.

see, for me the only $$$ i need to worry about is the initial pay... my parents will pay insurance b/c i am only 16. however, what do you mean the 1000k - 2000k per year?
It is okay if i dont have a fallback cushion b/c if i get stuck in a hole im just 16 and i am not alone my parents can help or my aunt who makes a couple million a year. im not rich or anything, just saying those are my fallbacks, i think i would like to pay this off every month and by doing so, also establishing a good credit history.

so i will look at the faq... but i am afraid that the dealerships do not have the 2000 models... btw... what is the MAJOR difference between 2k and 2k1-2k3 models? besides 180hp in the 2k....

Oh lol this thread is going to be intresting.

I'd start with an Acura RSX Type-S for a starter, no slouch either

TT is fairly expensive to maintain..especially if you are getting used ones. I spent about 2 months browsing through forums to get an idea of the type of maintenance I need to do and avg cost to do them (parts and labor..just in case i can't do them myself). These cars are **** to have electrical problems such as the instrument cluster, which is couple hundred there. Another is the timing belt, which everyone suggest to replace at about 60K miles. I believe this job + parts is about $1K (someone correct me here). of course if you get bitten by the mod bug, then things starts to add up quick.

drive both....i almost got an STI and an S4 before i drove the TT(225)....plus the TT looks much better then both inside and out! the S4 has some serious power like the STI and with some Mods you can get those close to 400hp on the stock turbos....My TT(AMU) feels faster than the STI...which makes me very happy. I"m gonna race one this summer (under safe conditions of course) good luck and try and drive both TT models if you can...the 180 and the 225 you should be able to find a 225 TT 2001-2002 for around 15k easy with like 70k miles on it. good luck
