Need some help please - tranny slip?
I have a 2004 3.2 quattro, and on my way to work this morning, the car pretty much fell into neutral. I was simply cruising, when i heard/saw the rpms jump up. I let my foot off the gas, and gave it gas again...nothing, simply revving engine. Still in drive. I roll into a parking lot, turn off the car, turn back on, and everything is fine.
I leave work today, and the same thing happens when i get on the highway. The car just falls into neutral. I tried putting it in "manu-matic" mode, and nothing happens. Pull over agian, turn car off, and turn back on. Drive home in 5th in manual mode.
I looked through my owners manual, and it says there is a tiptronic fail-safe mode, where the Gear selector display inverses colors (which it did, both times), but it says it is supposed to put it in 3rd or 5th gear to maintain drivablity, however it seems it put it in neutral instead. Anyone have any ideas of what to do/look for before I get bent over at the dealership??

Here is a thread where a guy had a similar problem.

It soulds like there is either a problem with the TCM or there is a problem with the wet plate clutches inside the trans. The DSG is like an manual transmission utilizing a tripe plate wet clutch, but the TCM controlls it. I would need the fault codes from the VAG COM to diagnose this. There are also a couple TSB repairs at the dealer for DSG transmissions so the dealer should be your next stop. Most shops like AAMCO won't touch that trans.
nah, it wasn't cold out. i live in houston. It gets down to like 30s overnight, but nothing like up north. I am gonna call the dealer today and see if i can drop it off there tomorrow. If it helps, I washed my car for the first time in a long time the day before yesterday. Didn't drive it the rest of the day, and then the first time i drove after the wash, it did it. I thought my car would be happy it was clean. It also has 70500 miles. Thanks for the heads up on what to expect though.
just a quick update if anyone is reading/caring
drove the car the next day in manual mode, tranny slipped (3rd drive in a row), but caught again, ESP light came on. I was able to make it back to work.
Left work same day, turned ESP off, no problems at all. I then drove the next day, 20 miles to the audi dealership, with ESP off, and again, no problems. I conclude something is electronically messed up with ESP.
Dealership doesn't call me back, so I call them, try to find out whats up. (i gave them a few complaints on it) replace horn - $585, replace driver airbag (light was on, apparently its bad airbag...how it just goes bad is beyond me) - $675, and there is a squeel when i start the car, they say the starter is "on its way out" - $850
As for the transmission - nothing wrong! No codes, no problems... I tell the guy, I figured that. Its in the ESP. Then, they pull the ultimate - "my tech worked on another TT with an aftermarket radio, and it shorted out the ESP computer..."
I'm an Advanced certified MECP installer, been in the 12v business for 5 years...don't tell me that putting in a screen shorted out my stability control, or messed up my transmission...
They keeping it over night, gonna drive it again tomorrow to try to replicate the problem.
I'm thinking about just trading it in or selling it...especially if they come back and tell me they don't see nothing wrong.

Alrighty... well, i still have the problem. tranny slips from time to time. dealer can't figure it out. they want me to leave it with them for days on end, who knows how many hours they will charge me. The check engine light was some "sporadic codes" and thats all they said about it. They reset it, and poof, there goes the engine light, and also the airbag light, which they earlier told me "can't be turned off, because the driver airbag is defective." funny how the light went out, even though i didn't pay them $700 bucks to replace the airbag. So they tried to rip me off there.
I think i decided to drop it off at a dealer and get something new...I went to carmax first, to get an appraisal...very disappointed. 12,500? kbb/edmunds both say around 14k. 04 audi tt 3.2 quattro, fully loaded S-Line coupe. no problems except a few rims are scratched (the the transmission of course, but it didn't slip when they test drove it, so !@#$ em)
any recommendations on what to do? Try a diff dealer and see if i can get more for it? I don't want to sell it outright, cus if it messes up on someone after a day or two of driving it, they will probably come after me...
