1996 A6 quattro transmission problems
This is the second vehicle that has an identical problem.it is 96 A6 quattro automatic
The tach does not work, check engine is on and as soon as i put it in drive the engine stalls just like it will when it is in 5th gear.
Also when i start the car the gear selector lights up...but as soon as i put it in reverse or drive it will not indicate gear. Also the oil light comes on but oil pressure is absolutely fine.
I would like to know why the rpm dial does not work and why when i put it in drive it stalls like it goes straight in higher gear...any of you guys had the same problem???
I had the same issue with a 95 Wagon.Identical issue...check engine on,oil light on but no problems with pressure, and at least this wagon will only sometimes stall when engaged in Drive.

RE: 1996 A6 quattro transmission problems
Well...guess what ???!! It was a wet ECM.Actually it was so corroded that made me wonder how the hell the engine was still running!!!
The ECM and TCM are both located under the carpet in the passenger footwell...remove the plastic trim(watch for hidden screws) and you will see a black box. Remove the two screws that holds the lid and you will see the ECU on the bottom and the TCM on the top....remove the connections from the ecu and inspect it...you should see the problem.
What i did after?!.. i bought a can of Brake Cleaner and a brush, cleaned the whole ECU , let it dry, and after all that i plugged it in and.....Ta-Daaa!!! Car runs like new!
