Question New TT owner! Got some questions...

Hey guys, i just bought a 2000 TT coupe!! Thought i would join this forum. I have always wanted this car and i LOVE it!! BUT there are a couple of issues i need to resolve!

1) My concert stereo is stuck in SAFE mode. Tried leaving it on for an hour tried EVERYTHING, does not let me get to putting in the code. The "stealer" wants $100 SOO i am contemplating installing a new head unit, was wondering if i could use the bose amp and speakers and just get a wiring harness and a stereo? Would like the Silver TT cover to still be able to close.

2) I may need a new turbo. I'm not sure, but it sounds odd on start up. I hear a fait grind the first second or two the car starts up then nothing. So im not sure. I could try to record the sound and upload if anyone could diagnose. (Fyi i live in a small kansas town, mechanics here aren't that great.) I did order the bently repair manual as i am very DIY!

3) Have a feeling i will need to replace the timing belt along with some other belts, I looked at them and i could see some cracking and such.

4) Its giving me a check engine light, i had the obd checked it said it was something to do with either fuel pressure? or the MAF? Im not sure.

ANY help or responses would be GREATLY appreciated!

You are not entering the correct code or doing it right. You need to hold the RDS and FM2 buttons together for a sec or 2 and then use the 1-2-3-4 presets to enter the code and then hold the RDS and FM2 again and it will come on.

2) I may need a new turbo. I'm not sure, but it sounds odd on start up. I hear a fait grind the first second or two the car starts up then nothing. So im not sure. Its just the SAI (secondary air injection) kicking on most likely. If the turbo was bad, it would be smoking out the back, making a grinding noise when building pressure or not make psi at all

3) Have a feeling i will need to replace the timing belt along with some other belts, I looked at them and i could see some cracking and such.

Then you should do it NOW. The motor is an interference motor and will ruin the head if it slips or breaks. Order a kit from ecstuning.com or mjmautohaus.com

4) Its giving me a check engine light, i had the obd checked it said it was something to do with either fuel pressure? or the MAF? Im not sure.

Need real codes. It can be intermitten or a real problem. Pull the neg side of your battery off for a few mins to clear the code and if the light comes back, get it read again and keep the codes.

I am doing everything correctly concerning the radio codes! it just will not work. Do you know any good aftermarket head units that would sit flush in the original radio cover?

Also do you know of any performance belt kits for the TT, like the timing belt and such? Im not sure why they used a belt in the first place, for such a crucial part of the engine. I would imagine a chain would be more durable.

Thanks for the reply!!! Very helpful info!

Not much into the audio scene. My stock bose works for me. You must have the wrong code if its not working with the above method.

The stock setup is fine. If you want to go nuts, they do make kevlar belts and manual tensioners. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4545303. As for chains, they didnt start using them until the TFSI found in the 2.0T starting in 09 model years
