use jack and stands. The plug is a 17mm bolt. the filter is kind of a pita to get to and get lose the first time (stupid shops trying not to get sued). But you might wanna use a plastic bag or something to catch the oil out of the filter otherwise you will have some cleaning to do. Also if you run a new larger passat oil filter you can run another .5 quarts or so.

they redesigned the b5's due to oil sludge sice it only held about 3.5qrts. So look for a 98-01 filter.
napa filter, passat filter, reg 1.8t filter.

How many quarts of mobil 1 should I buy tommorow? What about the weight? I plan on using the napa 1333, only because it's the easiest for me to get, but is there another filter I should try? Thanks!

if you plan on using that monsterous filter you need 6quarts. I think the passat filter uses close to 5,5quarts and the regular filter uses close to 5qrts. You can always use something else available at the parts store like mobil one or bosch, of even a fram if you want to.

the recommended weight is 5w 40 or 0w40 full syn. I have only seen castrol in 5w40 and mobil one in 0w40 where i live.

***change qrts for size, recheck the old thread

With the larger filter we fill 4.5 quarts in the 1.8T at work. If you aren't sure if you are getting the right size filter, just compare it to a Ford 5.0 filter - it will be the same size, and possibly bigger (not sure exactly how big that Napa monster is).

Little fun fact - you can use the your Audi filter on a 5.0, but not the other way around.
