Pick up an 02 or later with a CPO. If the car is over 60K you need to make sure that the timing belt has been changed, Audi recommends 110K, but experience has proven that anything past 60K is living dangerously.

As far as the "low redline" goes, it really isn't an issue, the TT's turbo spools quickly and you get boost at around 3500 rpm or better with a little tuning (Chip and boost machine). When I have mine at the track I am often in third gear at redline without any concern at all, the 1.8T motor is very reliable.

I had mine done at a local shop. They pulled, soldered and programmed it in under 2 hours. On the mail in, they can usually turn it around in a day.

I like the APR chip, I can switch programs using the cruise control buttons, so it is fast and I don't have to keep a hardware dongle around to make the change.

But truthfully, APR, REVO, and GAIC are all good chips, I would just go with someone you can get local support from. Do you have any Audi/VW tuning shops in your area?

Then I guess "through the mail" it is. You can go either direct to APR or through one of their dealers (ECSTuning, etc.)

If you go with the APR soldered chip, they send you your old chip back. I just have mine in a static proof bag in a safe place. In 3 years I've had no problem. My chip is programmed with 3 progs... 91 octane-my normal mode; 100 octane-for the track; stock-for smog testing.
