Default ? on radio safe mode..

Radio went to safe mode after removing battery.. My manual had the wrong code in it (apparently not the original manual) so i ended up getting locked out of trying the correct code which i found elsewhere.
Manual says i have to put the key in and wait an hour.. does the ignition have to be on or just key in? I don't want to waste my time and battery messing with it more than i have to.
Thanks...

Never heard this one. I would assume on since the ecu gets power. Turn it one, wait awhile, then go for a drive and it shouldnt be a problem.

Of course you could just put it in and come back later with it in the off postion. That is unless you are impatient

For future reference:

I put the key in (off position) and turned the radio on.. came back exactly one hour later and watched it change back to normal safe mode. I put the correct code in and music began to play.

Not sure if its the stereo or the manual that's not original.. my guess is the radio broke and was replaced with the same model by the previous owner.

Tried that.. its smarter than you would think.

I even pulled the radio out and removed the fuse and let it sit for a few minutes.. which is how I found out that my serial number didn't match the one in the manual.

kinda defeats the purpose of safe mode if you can bypass it by removing power, doesn't it?

You pretty much nailed the procedure. If you get locked out, let the radio sit on for an hr (it turns itself off after an hr anyway), and then try again.

If you DON'T have the code, try not to get screwed by the dealer to have it retrieved. I had one dealer try to charge me $99 for 1-hr diagnostics time, plus the code retrieval fee. Called them idiots, and went to another dealer. They charged me the $35 retrieval fee, and I was on my way.
