Selecting Reverse Gear - Stiff

Selecting Reverse Gear - Stiff
2002 Audi TT 6 speed.
I have just operated on my gear selector box to reinstall the gear selector cable onto the bottom pin of the gear stick assembly. I have also checked the other cable inside the box to ensure that is still on and working good.
Now all 6 x forward gears eelect well without issue.
I now button the whole thing back up and find reverse gear is very stiff. The car has been sitting for 2 months without running or any depression of the clutch.
Before this task, reverse gear was working fine and was not stiff.
Do I need to check alignment of the shift linkage to make it shift smooth again?
If so, what linkages do i check and how to check them?
What other possible causes / fixes exist or this issue?
