Default Strange Noise

Hello again everyone.

Yesterday I was noticing a strange ticking/almost grinding noise while the car was idle. The noise is faint, but it's loudest at 1500 rpm, and disappears at 2k. Then today, I came to a stop, both windows down, and I can hear another noise as I was slowing down. The sound is familiar to me, my last car made the same noise and the mechanic told me it was my throughout bearing. I know it's hard to diagnose anything over the net, but does this sound typical for a clutch that is going out? Both of these noises are faint, but I like to stay on top of things.

Any opinions? Thanks!

stick you head under the hood and see if its stonger. The 1.8t's valves make a lot of chatter, this could be what you are hearing.

valves making chatter? never heard that before. a lot of people say the injectors are making that noise. not sure which though

you could try and record the noise and play it for us

Can you give us an idea of the speed of the clicking? Does it change with speed or RPM? Can you make it go away at idle by revving the engine? Does it seem to come from any particular location?

I just tried recording a sound/video clip, but the noise is too faint to be picked up on cam. It doesn't seem to be as bad when I started the car up cold, but as it warms up, the noise get a little louder. It's a slight rattle at idle, becomes louder at 1.5k and by 2k it's gone, between idle and 1500 the rattling just gets louder, but not any faster. Only seems to be while the car is stationary, however it would be too faint to notice while moving anyway. I dunno, maybe it's just me being too paranoid. It could be anything, I'll just keep my eyes and ears out for anything else, then proceed to the shop.

Thanks for the help!

It's probably just the injector chatter you are hearing then. It's really noticeable at idle

ok i've been looking at this post and i too thought the same thing as most the other guys on here.....but then i look at your first post and you say an almost grinding noise. the injectors sound nothing like grinding. do you hear the sound from any particular side of the engine while you sit in the car? after i installed my clutch i didnt properly secure the power steering lines with the metal brackets and noticed after awhile they broke a little loose and are rattling against the tranny case. to quiet this i put some wire loom( from radioshack) and completly covered the lines (this is also wise to do this to protect them from road grime and rocks) as a temporary fix. i will properly secure them when i install my FMIC. hopefully that will eliminate that noise..which sounds very similar to what your describing. so maybe your power steering pressure lines are rubbing against the tranny case. your can check that by removing your airbox and looking if they rubbing while idleing hope this helps
