The sheet metal even though it is thin, is part of the overall structure of the car. It acts as a membrane which ties the different structural members together to make the combination of them stonger... Similar to the way the plywood on the roof of your house makes the overall structure below stronger.

While not really stong in compression the roof sheet metal is a really strong membrane in tension.
