Default Timing Belt $$ and services

My 04 3.2 tt has just under 60k miles, and I do not want to deal with a broken timing belt. but before i do, i'm trying to get a little research done... Should I have an Audi dealership do the service, and how much should I expect to pay. I called one place (an audi and porsche dealer) and they said around $1500 (including water pump, thermostat, etc..) is this the right price range, or is it higher priced cus its audi and porsche? Also, is there a benefit from buying an ECS kit and having them use that, or just having them use whatever they use? One last question too, the 10k mile maintaince...is it necessary to do that too while i'm getting the TB changed out? (i just got the car with 58,700 miles...i've only had it for 1.5k)

not sure if the 3.2 suffers like the 1.8t does.

Where are you located?

They use a differnt set up. Dont think its nearly as bad as the 1.8t issue. If you want more info on this, i would suggest going to the vwvortex R32 forum and search. There is a lot more users there with better info

the 3.2 does not have a timing belt, it uses chains. You dont have to worry about it breaking. the only thing that does eventually happen is the guides crack. You shouldnt need any major maintenance at this time.

isn't the 3.2 just a bigger 2.8 vr6? i had a vr6 thataround 110,000 miles the guides were broken a little but still fuctioning. when i had the timing chainserviceit was a huge deal, the transmission comes down and the whole top of the motor comes off. it's a nice chance to do cams and clutch mods if you want.

so...lemme get this straight - no timing belt but timing chain...now what about these guides? Do the guides need to be serviced, or do they just break and then they get replaced? I appreciate the information!

Odd that the dealership didnt know that you did not have a belt, but, rather a chain. Very curious.

I on the other hand have an 01 1.8 and do have the belt. My clock just tripped 60k and I am on the hunt to have this done, thus, I was reading this thread intently for any ballpark figures for dealer/indy replacement. I would prefer to see what others may have been charged so I know what to expect before calling around.

Anyone have this done by a shop?

those little plastic guides break and then the chain stretches a little. sometimes you can hear it, it's like a metal gurgling sound.

I think dealer average is around $1k for everything for the AMU 1.8 engine (225), as thats what I paid after calling around. I heard as little as $600 and as much as $1800. I think a lot of the difference is between the 180 and 225 engines though. Make sure you tell them you want the water pump replaced as well.
