Default timing belt fun

Brought my car to audi today for a free timing belt inspection. 2002 TT225Q with 47000 miles. The mechanic came and got me to show me the timing belt. He said the belt was wearing out and suggested replacement. Showing me it he point out "minor surface cracks". To me the belt looked great. It did have a little play in it which concerned me more than the condition of the belt itself. I didnt feel like paying 1800$ to fix something that he said "who knows it might last 2 more years". So now if it does break its not covered by audi which I understand.
For people on here about how many miles were on your car when the timing belt failed? Does the belt having a little play in it make it sound like I need to replace it asap? I was planning on doing it closer to 60k miles.

I'm at 112k and definitely pushing it. I truly need to get this changed out within the next few days... way too paranoid about it.

I don't think it's been changed, but I'm not positive. it's starting to get those dreaded white lines through it ... AGH

A bunch of money that I dont want to spend on it right now. The belt looked fine, I saw no cracks and no white lines? It only makes sense for dealerships to tell you to get it replaced, then theres no costs for them on the recall and they make a profit for you paying them to fix it. It makes no sense for them to say its ok and risk having to pay out a new engine if it goes. I think its all BS..

how many times does it have to be said?

the belt is rated for 100,000 miles, THE TENSIONER AND WATER PUMP FAIL.

Look at your belt all you want, it could look brand new. That doesn't guarantee you'll make it back to your driveway tomorrow.

5 years or 60K miles.

Doesn't matter what a techs opinion of the belt is, if its been longer than 5 years, or you're near 60K miles (or over), change it, it's due.

$300 in parts now, or $3000 later. Is it really that tough of a decision??

Ummmm.... Maybe a tougher decision when it's $300 in parts and $1500 in labor, and your car is only at 45k miles.

i would never pay to have the stealership do the tb. set aside a saturday, order the dieselgeek kit for $270 and do it yourself. I just did mine last month with my little brother and it was not bad at all. belt had 70k on it and it looked really good to me, a little stretched out. Took 10hrs (with an oil/g12 change), and there were no problems. there are a TON of diy's out there. go for it

I ordered the TB kit from ECS last Tuesday. It got her today and was going to have the work done on Sunday.. Well Saturday night the TB broke =(, Hopefully there isn't damage to the valve since I was only going 40 when I felt the car die.

Edited: Question... I have 104k miles and was never part of the original lawsuit. Since my TB broke b4 the 105k, will audi re-imburse me for damages and cost?
