Default timing belt scare!!!

Lastnight I took the timing belt cover off to check things out and I found... A lot of belt dust. The cover and engine block was covered with it. The belt itself looks to be good. I had the recall check done in july.
My friend who had changed timing belts on VW's said he has never seen anything like that.

keep an eye on the edges of the belt. for whatever reason, mine isn't tracking evenly, and is rubbing against one shoulder of the tensioner pulley. its worn to the point of being able to clearly see the cord inside the belt. I've had half the timing belt crap off the car a couple times since i first saw that, so i don't think it was a poor install, or i've poorly installed it a few times now. exactly the same way. I doubt I've lost even a mm of belt like this, and it'll most likely be fine until i'm ready to change it again, but its something to keep in the back of your mind.

Yeah I'm thinking about buying a kit just in case it gets worst. Aren't they like $250?

Buy it and change it. The belt usually isn't the point of failure it is more often than not the tensioner pulley that goes out first. Once that happens you'll jump a tooth in the belt and your valves/head are toast.

Man. Why couldn't they use a chain!
But really the belt doesn't show wear or anything.
In june(4 days after I bought it) water pump went out. Dealer changed it out. And I think (iv asked for a print-out on my car. Haven't gottin one) they changed the belt. At the time I didn't know anything about the timing belt issue. The total bill was $1200.

1200 sounds about right for full timing belt service at dealer.

Dealer will charger up near a grand. But the kit is cheap, 250ish. Get in touch with a guy around you, most audi fanatics love lending a helping hand. Or pay a mechanic the 200 or so bucks labor and have him do it. Dealer rips people off for such a simple job. It really is easy just time consuming.
