eurospec has come out with a mod for the timing belt system for the 1.8t 20v engines i asked them what this "periodic adjustment" and waiting on a reply. but if this turns out to be a solid kit you can bet i'll be doing this mod!!!!

Thank you for your inquiry. The kit involves replacing the timing belt and tensioner. Our mechanical tensioner greatly reduces the wear on the timing belt teeth versus the hydraulic tensioner, thus prolonging the life of the belt. Our tensioners do require periodic adjustment, however.

 

they use the mechanical tensioner found on the 2.0L vw motors. ive done this in the past due to part shortages, never saw a benefit to it though.
