TT 180. Turbo gone
Would anyone know how big a job it is to replace a turbo in a TT 180. No one seems to want to touch it. It started when I added oil, got loads of emissions for about 2 days, brought it to garage and then told me theturbo is gone. It's a 1999 tt. Does the engine need to be striped down to do it? thanks to anyone who knows.
hi thanks. I've been told it's gone by the garage I brought it to but they haven't dealt with a tt before so they won't replace it for me. I left it go very low in oil before replacing it, then the emissions started. Have I damaged the engine do you think?
You let the engine oil go way to low? That could blow a turbo from starvation. DId they test to see if the turbo made boost or take off the intake to check for play? If they havent, you should. Do you have a boost gauge?
However, if you did start the turbo of oil, you would fry it and need replacing

pull the blown turbo and buy this.

my word of caution - if that shop did not want to work on it - do not try and talk them into it. I had a body shop who did work on my TT and it was the first TT they ever touched, and I ended up having to get corrective repairs from another shop on the work they did...
If you don't have experience with mechanical stuff the turbo job isn't all that easy. It's hard seeing any of the bolts you need to remove. You have to work almost entirely by feel. Trust me, I tried and failed.

I've spoken to the guy who I bought the car from yesterday and he told me he's almost certain the turbo isn't gone and that it's an oil problem. (there was no difference in the power of the car before and after the event). Seemingly the oil I put in was too thin he reckons even though it was a Valvoline 5w/40. He recommends Havoline 5w/40. He's had a problem where he put thin oil in, got loads of emissions and had to change the oil.
It's confusing - should I get back onto the garage where it's still sitting and just get them to change the oil and try it??
thanks for all your help.
