What did you drive at 17?
I own a 64 Beetle now. However it has a stroker motor and is pretty bad *** and will light tires all the way through first gear. Little more power. Ran a new 2011 Vette at a light held him through first and some in second then he pulled on me. 2017cc Dual 44 Webers, Big Valve heads, 130 Engle cam, Ported and Polished heads.

71 Mercury Capri 2.0 liter engine, it was a Pinto engine. I put a Hooker header, 4 barrel 390 cfm Holly carb on it, and a 312 duration 468 lift cam in it. Sounded like a built v8 at idle only, rough uneven idle since that was a huge cam for this size engine. It felt pretty fast and was nose to nose with a late 70's mustang with a V8 in a drag race.
It had about a 9 second 0-60 time. A Prius could beat it now!!!

Guys Turbo Old Beetles all the time and could take out GTO's pretty handily LOL!. That and with a much milder base engine than mine. I would have to drop the Compression from 10.1 where it is now to about 8.5 however. But it would be scary fast. The Vette would play hell beating me through 1/4 then. Definitely would need some disc brakes then which I really need now. Stock VWs max speed - about 75. I hit 90 easily and much more go pedal left. 1750lbs gets a little spooky at speed with bad aero too.
I love old beetles. Those engines are bulletproof.... literally.
Try a '93 VW Passat Station Wagon. Not the prettiest car, but it had more options than most of today's cars. Leather heated seats, on-board computer, premium sound (except it wasn't), BBS wheels, awful 4 speed auto, that broke down and had to be replaced, but the best part: the LEGENDARY 2.8 VR6...oh, what an engine this was. Left so many people in camaros and other crappy domestics stunned at the lights, it was incredible.

I was 17 in 1981 and drove a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda Gran Coupe, 383, 4-speed, 3.55 limited slip with manual steering (my arms STILL hurt) and suicide 4 wheel 10" manual drum brakes. It had all the customary for the time stuff. Glass packs, M50-15 rear tires, air shocks, hood scoop, and (unfortunatley) typical rot for an 11 year old Wisconsin car of the era. Damn winter road salt.................grrrrrrrrrrr, grumble.
