Default $1500 upgrades.

im just wondering what you guys would do if you had $1500 to tune a stock b5 1.8T. thats about how much i have to spend right now and would like to do the best beginning mods for my car. i already included a speedtuning chip into the price but havent actually sent it out yet. do you guys think i should wait to do some supporting mods then send out the chip, or just tell Oliver what i plan on doing? and what mods should i do for about that much money? im looking mostly into making the car go faster because i already took out money for a set of drop springs. or should i take money out of the $1500 and get coilovers, which would leave me with only $500-800 for engine tuning.

I cant comment on 1.8t mods, but you should def chip your car. I got the speed tuning on my 2.8, and i have nothing other than good things to say. My car is much more powerfull now. Its def more bang for the buck.
You should get an exhaust also, thats my next major mod... Hopefully other 1.8t owners can give you better suggestions.

Doesnt seem like you will go far with that much money to begin with. In my opinion, spend the money for coilovers, i think its the one thing you shouldnt, and cant cut corners with mod wise. You can then do the chip and exhaust ( custom probably) and you will be set, till you get more money.

i have exhaust already and if i chip the car i still have $1500 left. u think i should spend all the money on coilovers and not anything like a FMIC or DV? i know everyone says that when u get the chip the power difference is like night and day but i think i still want a few supporting mods.

ummmm...do not put "drop" springs on your car without replacing the struts as well.

firstly....what does your maintenance record look like?...how may miles are on your car?....is your car manual or auto?...I would say the most important thing with our cars is preventative maintenance....

if all of your preventative maintenance has been taken care of then I would say suspension should be #1 on your list... if you want to go shocks and springs i would either go H&r/bilstein or vaugtland/ bistein...or if you are plannin on goin w coilovers i would say that you may want to try V-maxx (check 'em out on the stratmosphere site) they are low priced and rumored to be a pretty good set-up...

second thing on your list should be a chip....sadly I think you missed the speedtuning 200$ tune sale, but for about 450$ you can get a GIAC tune...go to GIACusa.com and find your closest installer...the chip will add about 45hp/60tq, the cheapest hp you'll ever buy...you definately won't be dissapointed...

from there i would either go w an eBay fmic (like godspeed) or a custom magnaflow exhaust (if you or one of your friends knows how to weld and has/have access to a pipe bender your exhaust will be relatively inexpensive.

other than that, a boost guage and a turbo timer will both be excellent additions....I would say a boost guage is a must have....

well good luck! take lots of pictures and keep us posted on how everything turns out!

thanks that was the kind of info i was lookin for. ill just clear up a few things to make it easier, i have straight pipes, so i dont think i should run a test pipe for back pressure issues. all of the maintenance is gunna get done too, im doing a seafoam then oil change, as well as my powersteering pump, i only have 60k so im gunna hold off on the timing for a while.
-my friend has a boost gauge that im buying from him.
-the car is a 5spd. and i didnt think about the short throw. are the e-bay ones any good? and is this a DIY job? im good with cars but not too good w/ trannys yet.
-i talked to Oliver and he said hell tune the car for $180 and it takes about 3 days.
-the car was reciently tinted.

So now u know a little more about my car so u guys think i should spend the $1500 and go all out on coilovers, or should i buy springs and a few other goodies (DV, FMIC0)?

thanks that was the kind of info i was lookin for. ill just clear up a few things to make it easier, i have straight pipes, so i dont think i should run a test pipe for back pressure issues. backpressure isn't really an issue with turbocharged cars. right now the air is being restricted at the cat due to the ends, and then going into a completely free flowing exhaust. the other way around would have been better. all of the maintenance is gunna get done too, im doing a seafoam then oil change, as well as my powersteering pump, i only have 60k so im gunna hold off on the timing for a while.

-the car is a 5spd. and i didnt think about the short throw. are the e-bay ones any good? and is this a DIY job? im good with cars but not too good w/ trannys yet. you wont be dealing with the tranny really. and yeah the ebay one's are good and its def. DIY
