Default $450 for wheel bearing replacement?

Local shop (not dealer) wants $450-500 to replace both rear wheel bearings. Is that about right? I was expecting $300-$350, so it was higher than I expected, but then I'm a cheap bastard who doesn't trust anyone

My normal mechanic can probably do it if it doesn't require special tools. Does it?

That seems high. Only special tools required are a standard wheel bearing puller kit. Time for that job should be about 1-2 hours and the partshould beless than 100 bucks.

easy DIY. pull out the hub yourself and take it somewhere to have the old bearing pressed out and new bearing pressed in.

You need to press the new bearing back in too. A lot of these places need to take it to a machine shop to get pressed. Machine shops charge at least $50 an hour and usually more. Not that it necessarily takes that long, but they have a minumum charge sometimes too. That cost gets forwarded on to you which sometimes makes the price higher than you thought it would be. Its going to be cheaper if you find a shop with a press, but thats not all that common.

Thanks guys. I don't even own a freakin' jack anymore, so unless it can be fixed with a flashlight and hammer...DYI is pretty much out for me. My normal mechanic says he can probably do it for about $225. He's not an Audi guy, but he's a good mechanic. He has his own press, but says he may not have the correct adaptor, in which case he'll take it to a machine shop.

$200 sounds very reasonable and to the others ( the tool that pushes the bearing out also pushes the new one in )
