Default 1.8 Auto seems high geared

Hi, i apologise that this is my first post. But am seeking some knowledge from like minded A4 owners!

Ive recently purchased a 2000 A4 1.8 auto, as much as its a lovely drive it seems to be revving alot more than expected on the motorway, 3200rpm to be exact at 70mph. My first thought was that there was a fault and there was another gear to go but it is changing through all 4 gears. My local gearbox tech went for a drive and said its fine also and thats its just the way its geared!

Is this the case? I had an old 80 1.8 manual and that did about 2800rpm at 70. Thanks in advance.

Rich

Huh. My '98 is was five speed auto.... Anyways, yeah. Generally automatics are geared a little high (read: numerically lower) when compared to manuals.

The differrence is that final drive on the auto rear diff is 4.11 and the 5 speed is 3.89 so yea you're going to notice the difference.
