Default 1996 A4 2.8 Quattro Manual $2700 good deal?

No Audi yet, this might change this week though.
Clean '96 with 144K---just has a bunch of stuff done--brakes, plugs, oil, timing belt, ect ect.
He wants $3500, I am offering $2700 and may drop that to $2500.
What do you think? Too many miles?
I am worried that 144K is approaching the useful life of one of these cars?
Will these cars go 200K?
I actually really only need this car to make 30K miles--buying a house--so in two years I will be free to get a newer model.

Whats a reasonable price for a car such as this--no real mods, no probs (right now) tinted windows, leather int, etc etc.

I would happily pay between what he's asking and what you're offering. That car will go 200k easily, and if you care for it well, some have gone 300k. With the work that's been done, snap it up.

I can attest to the car probably making it to 200K, I've got a 99 1.8t AWD sport with 230K miles and it still runs strong ( and it's for sale for $4000)

Sorry for the shameless plug. You might still want to get that t-belt checked out or replaced after you buy it.

Default handling? speed?

I am assuming this car will be fairly quick given that its a V6 2.8 right?

How will it handle--are the older models as nimble as the newer ones or vice versa?

How reliable is the 2.8 vs the 1.8? Does it have the same oil sludge issues?
Should I be worried about the type of oil used by this guy and/or previous owners?

Finally, what kind of mileage should I be looking at?

It'll actually be slightly slower than the 30v 2.8L engines (98 and newer), but on the street it's a negligible difference. Virtually zero potential for power mods. It's just as nimble as the other models though, and that can be further enhanced with mods. Probably the most reliable engine out of all those offered in the A4. It's not known for sludging like the 1.8T, but Seafoam treatments are still a good idea periodically. Don't sweat the oil choices from past owners - the 2.8 is fine on melted dinosaurs - no special synthetics needed. Mileage-wise, it's already been said - 200-300k is attainable on these without trying hard.

depends on your definition of what 'fairly quick' is
faster then a '93 dodge shadow- for sure.

I paid $2000 for my A6Q w/130k miles. Same work done - TB, WP, brakes, new tires (90%), tranny oil looked new, etc - as verified by my Mk1 eyeball, no paper work other than what was on carfax. Interior was showroom new - no burns, stains, wear, buttons even still look new. If $700 or more is worth it to have the paper work, go for it.

I had no idea these cars were so cheap over there! Next year I'm looking at flying to maybe New York via Tunisia, and doing a road trip to south america. Need a car for the trip, my minimum requirements are 150hp, ac, a comfortable ride that won't break down.
Buying a A4 2.8 v6 for $2500 and just.. i don't know, sell it to some poor Peruan people for 1500$ afterwards would be fine. Whaddayathink?

I picked mine up mint for $5000. It had 82,000 miles and a set of winter rims with it. I feel I did pretty good considering. You should definitely pick it up.
