Default 2.8 GIAC chip switch

I am looking to buy a giac chip from a guy who previously had one installed in his audi. I called up some installation shops and they said the ecu numbers had to be the same on both cars for the solder in type chips. Does anyone know if a chip has be soldered or just plgged into the board on a 1998.5 audi 2.8 30v.

Thanks

It has to be soldered in.

OBD flashing started in 2000. Sineo is right, you'll have to get it soldered in and there's no hope for a trial either.
