Default 2.8 quattro 12v swap to 1.8 quattro?

what do I need in order to get this swap going other than the motor(obviously) and tranny?
i have a 96 audi a4 2.8 quattro 12v 5 speed
no i don't want to sell the car all the maintenance is up to date(hopefully).

PS and if there are any DIY with photos that would be a plus!

thank you!

Assuming it's a quattro-to-quattro and 5spd-to-5spd swap, you'll also need the ECU, wiring harness, sensors, all of the engine accessories, exhaust, motor mounts, an intercooler of some kind with all the plumbing for that, basically an entire front clip. If you could find a suitable donor car that was really cheap but not too banged up it would be the best way. Depending on what year the 1.8T was coming out of you might also need to do a wide band swap.

You might be able to sell your 12v motor to offset costs, and you don't necessarily NEED a new tranny. The 2.8 trans will bolt up to the 1.8T bell housing, but the gears are a little bit taller. Some 1.8T guys making a lot of power do the 2.8 trans swap for that reason.

Can it still be registered or pass inspection with an engine with a different number of cylinders?

Sounds like a fun project

Who says you have to tell the DMV that it's swapped? Registering it is easy but if your inspection requires an ECU scan of any type you may have problems with conflicting VIN numbers on the chassis and coded into the ECU.

In all honesty, and not being a dick here, most people who can do an engine swap don't need to ask what parts are needed. There are always exceptions but that's usually the rule...

if you are in any other place rather than California don't even trip about about it

but if you are for inspection it wont really matter unless you made a car from OBD1 to OBD2 or the other way around maybe then you well have issues or if you are missing emission equipment is missing sensor etc.

but! and i well argue to death with anyone who contradicts me because i done this many times with different cars ! lol

you can swap any engine that was offer on your chassis v6 v8 1.8t 1.6 diesel what ever if it was offer on that chassis you can do it end of story seen it and done it personality here in cali just have all the right equipment cat sensors down pipe bla bla bla.

and i saw a audi a4(b5) rated to have a 1.8t and he had a 2.7L twin turbo and he said he dint had issues with smog emission or law . dont ask me how he did it idk but like i said its been done i even tough of doing the same as him lol.

i just saw a guy at a car meet with a 2.7L twin turbo

My dad always used to say "given enough time and money, anything is possible." Same is true for engine swaps. I've seen B5's with 1.8T swaps, 2.7TT swaps, VR6T swaps, 4.2 V8 swaps, single turbo 2.8 V6 builds, one guy even built a RWD big block Chevy B5. The reason you got the responses that you got in this thread is that a lot of guys look into doing a 2.8-to-1.8T swap as a cheaper alternative than selling the former and buying the latter, and that is almost NEVER the case.

IMO, if you're going to all the trouble to do a swap, do a 4.2 V8 or VR6T.

^^^ which will run you close to $10,000, and therefore brings you back to selling the car and buying the right one.

This, do something that wasn't offered in the B5, otherwise just sell your 12v and get a B5 with the 1.8t already in it. Will be much cheaper.
