Thingys under the intake manifold

Right, what exactly are these "thingys" under the intake manifold connected to the vacuum system and what do they do?

the thingy directly under the intake mani is the n249 valve. It's a vacuum/ecu controlled solenoid that controls when your DV opens. Read this:
