2.8er about to convert (1.8t buying advice)
Whelp I have an overwhelming desire to switch A4's from my current 2.8 to a hopefully low mileage 1.8t
There are no unsearched questions here. I'm mostly showing you guys a car I test drove last night and some others in other states - and I want your opinion
AS OF NOW:
The first option - 1999.5 a4qtm with about 82k
some pics:

While I was driving the car, I noticed that the clutch was much easier to push in than my 2.8's - also - the release point was higher (to my suprise) than my already high clutch release point. But it seemed to have no issues and he recently replaced the timing belt+water pump.
Second:
http://seattle.craigslist.org/kit/car/571226760.html
Looks good there... only 57k...
BUT:
I emailed her about the front damage and I got this in reply.
How do these look?
Thanks guys

The car has a clean title, nosalvage brand. There was some frame damage at the front end, but it didn't ripple back beyond the firewall. I believe the front crossmember was replaced, and possibly the right fender. The frame twist was mostly repaired, but there may be some slight bend remaining, resulting in the gaps that I mentioned in my ad.
How do these look?
Thanks guys
the silver one looks fine...... the second one i would run away from screaming
the 99 is a great year they say for mods..... hp wheels are good, but that is the exhaust i have and sorry to say it, but it is junk..... i am changing my muffler first chance i get
that is the way my clutch is....... what is the price on the first, mods?
History: Price of the car reflects previous repairs to the front end from a low-speed collision. Repairs are satisfactory, but not perfect; Gap between hood and front fenders is slightly larger than it should be at places. Hood fits and secures well.
the stuff in bold worries me too..... low speed collision but there are large gaps, did they do the repairs themselves....... satisfactory, but not perfect?
i bought my 01 sport with a minor ding in the hood that i didn't notice till it was too late...... in sept of 06 with 75,xxx for 12,xxx..... booked out at 15,xxx so 9600 for a nice 01 with 57 would be a steal......... but a 5 speed is not rare...... that is a joke
like i said how much is the first one.. what other mods?
do they have all the papers for the car..... if not you can get them through audi

Cool. I'll keep looking into the first one.
Got some more questions - I need a really stable foundation for modding because its going to be a daily driver - will this car (based on its mileage and clean title) be fine for that?
Being a 2.8 driver I'm not too keen on the functions of turbos or their supporting hardware. What things go out at around 80k miles? What are some things that I should look out for when I drive it again?
lastly, the guy is asking 9,200 for it... KBB says 8k
how can i bang that price down?

What are some things that I should look out for when I drive it again?does it have a boost guage at all? i would watch for surging..... you should be fine doing anything you want to that car..... the 1.8 is a very good motor as long as all the maintenance records are done
lastly, the guy is asking 9,200 for it... KBB says 8kas for all the maintenance records.... ask him how he got to 9,2...... when you know audi's and know that car is not worth that much, but if he is not willing to lower theprice don't buy it
how can i bang that price down?if he tells you that he is asking that much because the car is clean, find any small imperfections you can...... as a car salesman(ex) that is what we used to do, let them know their car is not as good as they think it is.... don't tell him, just walk around the car, everytime you get to a spot, stop and touch it..... you get the point
also if he says the wheels/exhaust.... blah blah blah..... tell him, keep that stuff and put the factory stuff back on...... he probably doesn't have it.... and to a dealership that stuff makes no difference....... then offer him 7500..... see what he says
the only way i would pay anywhere near that and i would never, is if it was a forum member

Drove the 82k 1.8t again today... drove it and payed attention to the car as much as possible.
some things:
-I didnt have to push the stick down to shift into reverse - that worried me
-The turbo was a lot louder than any other 1.8 i've driven. thats good I guess
-The car does not have the sport package, so the center console looks rather lame and it does not have the sport steering wheel - something I LOVE about my car
-He says it is lowered by 2 inches, however I dont know by what means
-Lastly, I checked his average gas mileage and it was LOWER than the average on my 2.8! I drive very spiritedly so mine isnt as high as it should be anyways. One of the reasons why I wsa excited about the 1.8 is that it gets significantly better mileage on the freeway (or so i thought)

Not having to push down for reverse is normal, and came standard starting in 99' or 99.5 I think.
I didn't know the center console changed with sport package, can anyone confirm? As for the steering wheel, why not switch yours into the 1.8t, or did you already get rid of it?
Ask him how he lowered it and check.
MPG is highly dependent on the driver, but it can be many other things aswell. I wouldn't be too concerned about it, most reasons for bad mpg on these cars seem to be cheap fixes, but if it is the driver, it can hint to you that he may have driven it hard.
Have you talked to him about the price? I personally prefer used cars, completely stock driven by older drivers or pussies. Also, what about service records? Having a reputable mechanic have a look at it? Also, if the clutch is riding extremely high, even for an Audi, it's probably on it way out. If possible, get the rpms up and see if it slips at all.
I'm not an expert, but I did spend the night at a holiday inn.

Drove the 82k 1.8t again today... drove it and payed attention to the car as much as possible.
some things:
-I didnt have to push the stick down to shift into reverse - that worried me my 01 is the same way

-The car does not have the sport package, so the center console looks rather lame and it does not have the sport steering wheel - something I LOVE about my car not sure on differences..... and you could do as stated about the changing wheels, but it would be noticed by someone
-He says it is lowered by 2 inches, however I dont know by what means find out how and if he changed the shacks/struts
-Lastly, I checked his average gas mileage and it was LOWER than the average on my 2.8! I drive very spiritedly so mine isnt as high as it should be anyways. One of the reasons why I wsa excited about the 1.8 is that it gets significantly better mileage on the freeway (or so i thought)
he probably gets into it to hear the turbo..... will probably change if you drive it easier

and you are not looking into other cars? at all?
Well i'm looking into whatever comes up. The used market via craigslist has been really slow here lately. Most a4's that pop up are auto's or 120k plus
however, I am in the process of selling my current car... and just tonight a problem sprang up. pretty stressful stuff. A guys was actually going to come buy it tomrrow morning
