Default 2001 1.8T rod bearings bad

Ok so I'm an avid DIY guy seeing as how my father was a Mechanic. Only problem is he was an American Motors kind of guy. I've personaly stripped and put togeather 4 motors and converted 1 Carberated to Fuel Injected.

As far as european motors go I've only had my hands in a very few. On top of that I've only ever gone to a VW or BMW dealer for parts.

Now I have a chance to get my hands on a 2001 A4 1.8T that needs rod bearings, and I was wondering if anybody knows anywhere that sells just the block without any internals? or a good place to get a shortblock at a decent price?

Keeping in mind this is the worst case senario for the car, I get to have a good look at it tomarrow in the daylight, so i can check to see if the block is cracked or worse.

New or Used works for me as I have a repital Machinist that can do the work on the block if need be.

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Not sure why you would need a new block if the rod bearings are gone? The only time you should need a new block is if you spin a MAIN bearing, throw a rod through the side of it, or it has been bored out to it's maximum and has worn out that bore. Even if you did spin a main bearing, the block can usually be reconditioned by line boring it after shaving the caps a bit

In my 3+ years of whoring it up on the forums, I have never heard of an Audi needing rod bearings. Whats the story? Modified? How many miles?

Well I'm going to assume (I know thats a bad thing) that its a kid and they tried to bump up the power and failed, I guess I'll find out more once I see it today.

As for the block being bad, I just don't know if the person is telling the whole story so In the worst case senerio I was wondering where I can get a short block cheap if I need it.

If not I'll just strip it, build it, and put it back in. I mean if it is just the bearings then all is good, couple hundred bucks and few hours and badabing badaboom rebuilt bottom end and a inexpensive A4 Quattro to go!

I talked to the person selling it, I guess if you don't check your oil and make sure there is enough of it, this type of thing happens... Go Figure... so this car sounds like it wont be to much of a hassel to get up and running.
