Question 2001 a4 stumbles horribly

hey guys,

my audi has an obnoxious stumble throughout the rpm range. when it started, it just happened right as the turbo kicked in, but now its constant. i recently cleaned out my intake which was full of leaves at the airbox, and it helped but now its back. i was just fooling around with it one day and pulled out the plug that is underneath the little rubber cone on the top of the airbox, and it ran fine. i dont think thats the maf because the haynes repair manual i have says the maf is farther down the airbox. does anyone know what this is or other possible solutions? its to the point that at times its dangerous because my car gets caught up and wont continue to accelerate until i change gears.

any help would be appreciated!

that plug may have been your maf. if you unplugged it and your running normal. then your maf is bad. and needs to be replaced. or before u drop 120$ on a new maf, pick up some MAF cleaner from autozone for about 5$ and give that a try. you dont want to drive with your maf unplugged you will run rich and get horrible gas mileage

yeah it would make sense if that was the maf because i did get awful milage when it was unplugged.

01afour:
never had my car chipped and it generally happens throughout the rpms when the turbo is boosting. i dont have a boost gauge so i havent been able to monitor it that way but the stumbling is very obvious. it doesnt usually happen as noticably when im runnin it hard but under normal driving conditions its very obvious. and as far as limp mode i have no idea what that is or what it feels like im still pretty new to the audi scene..

I'd suggest using a VagCom and pulling some codes to really see what's going on. BTW, wouldn't hurt to check your spark plugs and see if they are fouled. But just go ahead and get some NGK BKR7E's so you don't have to pull them out twice in case they are fouled.

Try checking your coils... I had a similar problem with my 01 A4 1.8T and one or two of the coils had popped up off of the sparkplug a bit. But it started to stumble around 4K badly. Once the coils were pressed back down the problem stopped. Just a quick and easy check. Good luck!

also check your diverter valve... never know, it could be prematurely opening.
