Unhappy 97 a4 misfire

At first my boyfriend and i thought that it might be the spark plugs so we replaced them. We figured it would not hurt since we where not sure if it had been done before. But the car is still misfiring. So i dont know if it is the coil or if it is something more serious.

either a coil pack or ICM. switch the coils around, if the misfire follows to a different cylinder, theres your problem. if it doesnt, its the ignition control module. MAF sensor is also a posibility if neither of those two things work. what are the codes that the car is throwing?

I have not run any tests on it yet. I plan on getting a reader today so that we can figure this out soon. I really hope it is not th ignition control module that thing is expensive.

how do you know that its misfiring if you dont have any codes? is your check engine light flashing?

if it turns out that your ICM is bad, i have an extra one i would be willing to sell you for cheap.

when the ICM fails or starts to go, usually cylinder #2 goes first. since the misfire didnt move, i would suspect the ICM.

is this a common problem with these 1.8 engines? I'm hoping in the next couple years to either sell the A4 or completely rebuild the engine and upgrade pretty much everything... just wondering if its something i should address if i go that route.

I'd start by swapping the coils and see if you get a different reading.... you'll have to take them out to change plugs anyway and it only take like 2 minutes... give you a good starting point

yes the ICM is a common thing to fail. 2000 and up models do not have an ICM, they are built into the coil packs, which is why they have an extra wire running to them. 2003's dont have ICMs either.
