Hey ghost, you know of any companies that make reliable aftermarket ICMs? If we keep the car it's probably going to be turned into a track toy so I want as few things to worry about as possible. I already plan on pretty much all new fuel system, as well as chip and sparkplug upgrade... going to start with Neuspeed's K04 kit, so any other advice would be great as this is my first and only Audi (unless i can talk her into an avant)

so we installed the new icm. That seemed to have worked. I cleared the codes and re-ran the test. i got no codes so that was good. But now we have smoke coming out of the exhaust. The car has been sitting for two months though. So we let it run for a mins and it still did it. So could that be from it just sitting for so long. Should we just let it run a little while longer?

there isnt really any such thing as an 'aftermarket' ICM. the OEM one is made by bosch and there is a cheaper one made by Huco. being an OE supplier, Bosch has the advantage of being built to OE spec and quality. Huco is probably just as good but its not an OE supplier so quality is not specifically known. i have a Huco brand one in my car and havnt had a problem with it.

the smoke could have just been from sitting for a long time. if it does that regularly there could be a problem but if it just does it that one time on startup i wouldnt worry.

it was white smoke but it stopped... it was also smoking under the hood and when i looked closer there was a slight greasy moisture on the turbo/exhuast...i ran a couple errands and it stopped too. I appreciate all the help... O and i asked about the aftermarket stuff cuz i've built a few american trucks and swapped to MSD or Venom ign.boxes so i didn't know if anything like that was available for these cars... I think I'll try to pick up another MKIII golf instead of getting too crazy with the A4
