Default 97 Heater Issue - Flushing sort of helped

Hi All,

I have recently purchased myself a '97 A4 (V6 2.6 12v), and did not realize that the heater didn't work. To be more precise, it works at first and then on high it's mostly warm (as opposed to hot) air.

After searching around the internet I found a few threads mostly here that talk about flushing the heater core. So today I flushed the heater core forwards and backwards a few times, not much gunk came out.

Anyway the heater is hotter now, but still not very hot. I have noticed that if I rev the car to around 3000 rpm the air temperature out the vents rises close to what I would expect on the high setting. Normal driving (revs between 1500 - 2000) results in warm air. I have also noticed that the center air vents tend to be hotter than the side (driver and passenger) air vents.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend anything else I could try, as I don't really want to replace the heater core. Perhaps flushing the heater core with something else? Would flushing the entire cooling system help? The cooling fluid seemed to be in mostly good condition, but there was quite a bit of deposits in the coolant reservoir, which were an orange colour(which I cleaned out), while the fluid was green.

I'm glad I found these forums.. so much reading to do.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Try flushing the coolant. It should be the g12 coolant, not a green coolant. Try emptying it and running it with water and flushing out the system a few times and refilling it with a mix of g12 coolant and distilled water.

Thanks for the reply Jessec, would any of those flushing additives sold at auto stores do any good, especially if I flush the whole system?

it could be the thermostat. g12 is only available at the dealership or blauparts.com is a good place online to get it

Thanks hiwords, how do I know if it's the thermostat? When the engine warms up to temperature 90 degrees C, it doesn't move around it just sits at 90. Does that help at all?
