Default 98 a4 2.8 30v making whine noise

I went to turn my car on today and it started making like a whine noise. I think it might be a belt or something. Anyone have any ideas?
thanks

Can you be anymore specific? Does it do it at idle and then go away? How long did it last? Did the pitch change with a change in RPMs? Where did it sound like it was coming from? Was it very loud or just enough to be noticed?

It did it for about 5-8 minutes. Just a constant whine, not too loud but I could slightly hear it from inside the house. I didn't rev it or anything so I can't answer the rpms question.

i have a similar problem, it started when i did my timing, i turned on my car (without the radiator/coolant etc. hooked up) it seemed to come from the fan NOT connected to the block(passenger side).
when i first heard it it was LOUD as hell. but now again it happens when i start it for like 10mins, but its very faint, almost like my turbo doesn't have enough oil(but its not from the turbo) it goes away after its idled for a few minutes. and there's no logical reason why the fan would make this noise.
just thought id add, it has no affect on driving or power etc. whether i let it idle for 5secs or 10mins.
obviously i have a 1.8t, 2000.

Hey, I get how annoying it can be when a weird mechanical noise keeps popping up and you can’t figure it out. To take a break from troubleshooting, I spent some time on game twist and tried a few slot rounds, losing a couple at first. Then I went for live roulette and hit a solid win that actually lifted my mood. Small wins like that can make even frustrating days feel a bit more enjoyable.
