Yea I think you're on to something. Like Jonesy said, its a reverse thread. And you'll need a pretty skinny spanner to get to that bolt that holds it all on.

 

does a bad fan clutch typically make any kind of whirring noise? I have one that just started this week. Also noticed that car is warming up during stop n go traffic, but fine with normal driving. Car has 148k miles, 2.8.
