99 a4 as an offroad car?
I am interested in rally racing, but I know im probably never going to actually enter a competition or make money off this dream of mine. But for now let’s throw that out the window. Let’s pretend im a rally racing team looking for a new car. Would an a4 be a good choice? Mine is a 2.8 v6 with Quattro AWD, so I would assume it has enough power, and the 4 wheel drive I assume is a must for off-roading at all. Can anyone clarify?
Also, since I already do have this car, if its good enough, what kind of modifications to the actual car would I have to make? I know that a lot of times cars are raised, but would it really be required? And as for the undercarriage of the car (I haven’t seen it), is it protected? or will I need to get some kind of guard so that rocks don’t grab anything? |
You will need a bulletproof trans case, oil pan and dif, more lift, and a skidplate to start
|
Keegan is right. You will need all that just to start.

how much will that run me?
|
You'll need a different motor too ;-)

like a 4.2 ^^^

4.2 bi-turbo antilagged with a couple t3/t4s, s4 drivetrain, with a dogboxed 6speed :D
If you somehow made a bulletproof skidplate, youd be on your way, (slower than my friends crv however) and could just see how long before things break, it still is an audi after all.... Maybe isolating the skidplate off of the bottom of the car by about an inch with hard pounting points, with a hard metal (steel?) and you could forego the 10k to have custom parts made for your drivetrain |
There's a member here called The Russian who rallyes his 01 A4. Swapped a 4.2 into it and runs a panzer plate. Lemme see if I can find the build thread.

Guys... Currently, you cannot have a rally car with an engine displacement of more than 2.0L, and you are limited to one turbo.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Rally_Car
They also have limitations to lightening the car. Most of the limitations were because Audi Quattro was such a good rally car that they had to make some changes so the other teams could compete with it. It got Audi banned from WRC. The A4 is the Audi Quattro's grandchild http://s-cars.org/site/wp-content/up...06a5bd4786.jpg http://www.audistory.24max.de/old1/p...ris_rallye.jpg There's a guy on AZ who has been working on his for a while (the one above is not his). He lives in Europe and his whole interior is gone... he had the 1.8 non-turbo car and put a 1.8T in it. I was recently on some dirt roads in NH and I was going sideways around some of the corners for fun :) stock suspension height FTW EDIT: The car is already fun to drive offroad, but a lot of those champion rally cars are like $100k+ with all the anti turbo lag systems and stuff... Obviously you don't want a WRC car, but it's just a price figure to keep in mind. |
