99 a4 as an offroad car?
Also, since I already do have this car, if its good enough, what kind of modifications to the actual car would I have to make? I know that a lot of times cars are raised, but would it really be required? And as for the undercarriage of the car (I haven’t seen it), is it protected? or will I need to get some kind of guard so that rocks don’t grab anything?
If you own it then just built it to do what you want.
If you plan on jumping the car then you need to raise it up to give you more travel, other wise the car is going to bottom out and break something.
No the bottom is not protected, well it is but its just plastic. You need to build a thick metal skid plate that is longer so it also sits under all of the transmission.
Racing turns millionares into thousandaires. F1 turns billionaires into millionaires. Racing ain't cheap.
However, first start by taking all non essential items out of the car. Replace glass windows with plexiglass/lexan. Put decent to excellent fully adjustable shocks on. Start strengthening pivot points/arms, engine mounts etc with custom fabrication, or 3rd party parts. List goes on and on. Oh and really, never forget safety. GET THAT ROLL CAGE, HELMET AND HANS DEVICE!
HOWEVER, it would not suprise me to find like in AutoX or track racing to have an all stock class for rally. Buy a beater for it, but read the rules, visit the event, talk to people doing it.
If you want cheap racing, get into remote control car racing. I do that as well, but it can be costly. My 8th scale buggy was $1200 not including supporting items, and my onroad 10th scale car is $900, again not including supporting items. Again, go to an event and discuss all aspects with the participants. Again rules in each class set an imaginary bar for cost usually.
