Are you able to test drive it? Make sure that the gears do not slip in forward and reverse. Shift it into manual mode and make sure it shifts nicely. Other than that, there is really know way to tell the health of a transmission. You can choose to change the fluid once you buy it so you know it has been done. Also check to see when the timing belt has been done. If it has detailed records of the history of the car then that is also a really big plus.
