A4 transmission problem
hello everyone,
I have a 99 audi a4 1.8L with an automatic transmission. about 4 months ago, i was driving and a bearing in the alternator went. The entire car shut off and i heard a loud bang(not sure where from). I had the alternator repaired but then i noticed that the gears were giving trouble to change from gear 2-3. When i was almost home, i stopped on a hill and when i was about to drive off, the car would not move and smoke was coming out from under the car. I then took it to a mechanic and the said that he needed an overhaul kit. Today i got back the car and the mechanic said that he was not able to fix it because he cannot figure out what was wrong(what a retard). He plugged in his computer somewhere and checked the sensors and said it nothing was wrong with it. CAN SOMEONE HELP PLEASE?
and as you can see, i dont know much about cars

Sometimes two things happen at once and you naturally want to think they are related. I'm not sure your alternator problem had anything to do with the tranny problem. When an automatic won't shift, or when it won't drive, that tends to point to a lack of hydraulic pressure in the trans. Either you're very low on fluid, or the pump is bad...valve inside there is bad, clutches, etc. And when you saw the smoke, was the red fluid on the street under the tranny?
If you don't know much about cars, I think you at least have to get smart about finding a good mechanic. In fact maybe you at least take it to an Audi dealer just to see where you are. Pay him for an hour and you'll know where you are.

lol well the mechanic did a complete overhaul on the transmission but i dont know if he checked the pump but i know he replaced the clutches and gaskets, etc. Another problem is that i am from Trinidad and Tobago ( the caribbean) and the audi dealers completely rip us off. They are wayyy overpriced and they damage other parts so that you keep coming back.
Oh.. and i saw a couple drops of fluid but i was not sure what colour it was.
