Default ABS active most time I press brakes. HELP!

Audi A4 B5 Quattro 1.8T, 2000

Hi,

Been a while since I was here. Your advise for DIY and sources for problems worked out last time and all repairs done.

I have a new one. This is something that has been going on for a while though, I did not mention this last time.

When you pres on the brake, the ABS kicks in 80-90% of the time. I.e. the pedal under the foot chatters and you here it.

Error code on report VAG - COM.

8EO614111A
ABS/EDS 5.3 Quattro D10
Coding: 0273004284
Shop: BB2434
No Fault Code.

Can someone point me in the direction.

I have read many stories about the module being the culprit every time. I found several places to fix them from $50 to $400. Some good comments and some very bad comments on service.

Is is the module or the Pump. The P/N on the VAG report 111A is for the Pump.

What do you think?

New parts from Audi are scary priced here in Canada.

I thank you again in advance.

Joe

It sounds like a dirt, damaged, or mis-aligned sensor at one of the wheels. When I had this happen, if I pressed the brakes enough, the ABS light would come on and the ABS would shut off, then reset after I restarted the car. You can diagnose this without a code however. Go to the measuring blocks screen on your VAGCOM. This will give individual speed readings for each sensor. Look for one that strays from the rest. If you find one that does, that is the problem sensor.

EDIT: BTW usually when the module is at fault, you get other errors (usually reporting an error communicating with the instrument cluster I believe), and a abs/flashing brake light combination on the dash.

Hi Dallas09. This sounds good, and you are right there is not ABS on the dash, so the sensors must be the issue. Will let you know.

HI guys,

i seem to have a simalar issue, when driving at low speeds stop and go i feel the brake pedal pulsate, and then all three light turn on brake, abs, antislip. also when i make a right turn only i feel the abs module kick in but dont feel brkae pedel pulsate. but when i shut the engine off it resets its self and starts all over again.

any thoughts? Dont have a VAGCOM trying to find someone who could help in my area of nassau long island.

Sounds like the same problem of wheel sensors. A VAG will tell you what sensor is the issue, otherwise you can clean and check all of them which would be a PITA.

After lots of checking, the sensors were NOT at fault after all.

The problem was also reported on another thread. Right Rear CV Joint.

There is a geared ring which is cracked and this crack at low speed sends a signal to the ABS modul which tells it the wheel is slipping. This is only at low speed, i.e. last 25-0 MPH when braking.

Very frustrating to find the problem. Always thought it was module or sensors, but in the end mechanical ring failure.

So have them check the right rear CV joint. Probably solve all your problems.

it's not the cv, it's the ABS tone ring that is pressed onto the cv joint. you have to slide the cv part way out of the hub to actually see it. also you won't get any codes to point you to the right corner. you have to check each one individually

Smile ABS tone ring

Wow,

I did not know what to call the ring, but you have the right terminology.

Thanks for the clarification.

It is that cracked bugger that screws up the ABS signal and tells it a wheel is slipping. From discussion with others, it seems to be always the right rear.
