Default After timing belt change, things are different...

OK - so I just changed the following: Timing belt, timing belt tensioner, timing belt pulley, serpentine belt, ac compressor belt, spark plugs, air filter (k&N drop in), and gasket on the water pump. Also checked the shaft play and it's fine

The car is currently on stands in my garage and the fuel tank strap bolts have been removed in prep for a fuel filter change (which is tunring out to be challenging due to the 12-point star bolt). ALSO I drained the coolant and replaced it with approx 1.8 gallons of distilled H20.

ANYWAY, I turned the car on and let it run for 10 minutes. Here is what I noticed:

1.) There is a CEL. I have not idea how to read what this is.. I hear people refering to a VAG code puller. Where should I get this and which one should I get? Sounds like an improtant thing to have.

2.) There is no temperature reading on either the Oil tempreature or the Coolant temperature gauges. I feel that after 10 minutes of operation (and after the car getting quite warm) there should be some reading on the temperature gauges. What should I do here to make sure everything is OK?

3.) Everything else sounds and appears normal. No strange noises or vibrations. Engine sounds strong.

Yeah - I think so -- the only major reason cars use anti-freeze solution is to prevent the system from freezing in cold temperatures. I think.

As soon as I finish everthing else I'm going G12 50/50.

The idea is to flush the system. (Car had some strange orange coolant in system)

H20 is okay, at least for a while, antifreeze prevents freezing, corrosion, and raises the boiling temperature.

You can also use an OBDII scanner to pull the codes. You can go to Autozone or a similar shop, have them pull the codes, or buy one for yourself. The one I have cost $80 and allows you to both pull and clear codes.

Update: The car's temperature and oil tempreature gauges work... i just had to wait a really long time for the car to heat up.

ALSO I just realized that I installed my hood latch incorrectly. I think I can get at it with torx bit and a wrench without taking the whole front end off again. That would suck.

What tool should I buy to check the CEL code?
