Default Aftermarket alarm or no?

I just got a Viper 791xv for free and I am considering installing it into my Audi but I am still undecided. It is an alarm w/ remote start as well and remote start is something I have always wanted but at the same time I am cautious about it w/ a stick. I don't want to have my Audi backed into the neighbors house like one member did lol. Is the aftermarket alarm more trouble then its worth? Is there a neutral switch in the transmission or something that could be wired into to prevent it from starting in gear? I never ever leave the car in gear but I can not say the same for anyone that touches my car. Any info would be good is the alarm more trouble then its worth?

A buddy of mine put a remote starter on his 02 Legacy, but the people that did it had to add a switch. It was kind of an odd setup actually. For the starter to work, he had to put it in neutral and double-clutch the hand brake. Near as i can tell, all that did was activate the starter, but there was no guarantee that it wouldn't start in gear if he left it in gear. As far as their being a neutral switch in our cars i have no idea.

W/ regards to the alarm, i think it'd be more trouble than its worth. I don't think the movement sensors and stuff on the inside would work if you added an aftermarket setup.

GL!

I like my factory remote start but the remote only works from 15 ft or closer so living out in the country that gets to be impractical. I want to see if I can get a newer remote that will work from farther away. As for the alarm; if it didn't get me cheaper insurance I would rip it out. I find car alarms very annoying and no one pays attention to them anymore anyways.

Im thinking I might just sell it on ebay and get a nice but cheap remote starter if I decide I need it. I'll probably just leave the remote at home too since that should be the only place I feel the need to warm it up before going.

I wouldn't install any aftermarket alarms in... they are always a nasty addition to an already sensitive VW/AUDI elec system. The gremlins they created gave me fits as a dealer wrench. Even in professionally installed applications (the installers usually are at best shadetree mechanics anyway) never seemed to have happy endings. Not to say you could be the exception, but I wouldn't touch one. Ebay it for a short-shifter!

What about this alarm Thatcham Cat 2-1 Wireless Canbus Alarm With ADR | Alarms & Immobilisers it's a CAN alarm so I'm guessing it should integrate smoothly? Has anyone tried it?
