Default Another 'Guess that noise' Thread...

So, i want to start by saying that my car doesn't burn oil. it holds boost relatively well (tappers off above 4500 rpm, but i blame the small turbo, right..?), and is NOT throwing a CEL. That said, when i'm driving above say, 30 mph, between 7 Hg vacuum and 5 psi boost it makes this wierd..moany sound? it's a pretty low pitch, and i just can't figure out what it could be. it doesn't do anything when i'm above 5 psi, or below 10 vacuum, and it doesn't do it if i just rev the car in neutral. any thoughts..?

Does it happen in all gears? Have you done a boost leak test?

I've only noticed it in like, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. It only happens if i'm cruising and holding it steady where the boost gauge is between 10 vac. and 5 psi. if it's just passing through there and continues building boost it doesn't make the noise. And no, i haven't done a boost leak test. I didn't think it would be that since i can get it to hold a steady 7-15 psi. i suppose it could be a small leak or something though..? i'm not sure.

P.S. i found a good word to describe it: it sounds like when your windshield is PARTIALLY wet, and your wipers make the grunty noise when they go across, and it's like a sign that you need new wipers? yeah, VERY similar to that. haha.

I had a leak myself a long time ago with my car, and I would get this super high pitched whistle, very loud mind you, at 3,200rpm which was so weird sounding. People were always like is that your turbo lol. I tightened all hoses to stock intercooler and such. Haven't heard the noise since. So try tightening some hose clamps sir. If it doesn't go away well then you have something failing somewhere else in the intake system. And it sounds like wipers on a partially wet wind shield lol. That's humorous.

it's the best way i can think to describe it! and i tested yesterday to see, and i can't get it to do it in 1st often, but i did get it to do it in 1,2,3,4 and 5. so it HAS to be related to something intake related. haha. alright, i'll check some hoses. i just find it interesting that there is no check engine light or anything, you know? haha. besides, and aside from the noise, it runs fine.. haha. maybe i'll check into tightening things down after i finish wrapping the belt line trim with red suede. haha.
