Another 'Whining noise from Rear End' Thread Question
Hi Guys, I've been dealing with a rear end whine that seems to kick in around 20 miles an hour or so and can become deafening around 40 mph. It seems to go away for the most part after 45 or so. Weird thing is when I'm coasting off the highway and I tap my brakes, the noise becomes much quieter. Brakes are brandy new. I naturally suspected wheel bearings as I had the drivers side fail the traditional way last summer and had to replace it. I just replaced the passenger's side thinking that was where the whine was coming from and, no dice. If anything it seemed to get louder after the repair. I did notice that the outboard cv on the rear pass. side was seeping a little grease but it hasn't dumped it's load completely. Has any one else had these symptoms from a failing rear cv half shaft or could it be my diff? I'm trying to avoid a 'throw money and time at it till it goes away' scenario. I know I'm in need of an alignment but I'm not getting any severe tire wear on any corner. I just serviced the diff and trans last summer with redline synthetic oil fwiw...
It's in my sig but 96 A4QM 229,000 miles.
Thanks guys!
