Default Any helpful hints to replace exhaust manifold?

I've been looking for a write up on how to carefully replace the exhaust manifold on a 1.8T.

How much of a PITA is it to get to the bolts on the bottom side of the manifold? What's the best way to get to them?

My plan is to remove the cat/downpipe, turbo and manifold.
Then I want to remove the studs in the head and replace with new ones.

My main concern is to not break any studs when I remove them from the head.

Dang...no one with any suggestions, or link to a write-up? Bummer...

Can I take the manifold out with the turbo attached, or is it necessary that I remove the turbo first?

Anyone? Anyone??

May or may not be necessary to remove turbo from manifold, I don't know which 1.8 are transversal mounted vs which are not and such. The trick is to use plenty of penetrating lube. It's not hard to do, just get in there and do it. Mark your vac lines with white out cause I think there are 2 or 3 that you can easily mix up, resulting in boost issues.

it is kinda of a pita only because you really don't have any room to work and if you get a high flow manifold get the 034 motorsports one i have the the kentrix motorsports one and it has some issues.

Look here

Thanks for that PDF.

I bought an ATP high flow manifold. Finished installing it yesterday afternoon.

Had to mess around for a while to get out a broken stud...and putting on the nuts on the bottom side of the manifold was a total PITA. I finally managed to do it, but it took a lot of blood, sweat and tears...and swearing.

Notice any improvement in response or power with that setup?

when i put my high flow mani on from 034 it was just a matter of having the right tools to make it easier.

i had to shave the manifold a little bit as well just so i could put a socket on the bolt, haha. it was a PITA, but i have better flow for my hybrid k04. just by looking at the mani's you can tell theres a big improvement in flow.
