Default Audi shut off waiting for light to change...

'01 A4 1.8T, stock.

I'm wondering if any of you have encountered this before. I was just driving along, minding my own business, waiting for a traffic light to change, and all of a sudden, my car goes from a smooth 750 RPM idle to zero. Dead. I have never experienced any type of rough idle before.

Try to crank it over, sounds like everything's ready to go, it just wouldn't fire up. Definitely not an alternator/battery issue. Eventually tried a few more times, and she finally started. Was able to pull into a parking lot, and noticed the EPC light on. Shut the car off, tried firing it up a few more times, no issues whatsoever. EPC light gone, CEL never came on. Drove it home, no issues. Drove it to work this morning, no issues. No rough idle, smooth sailing.

Weather wise, it was the warmest day we've had here this spring, around 19 C. Temp gauges were normal, both oil and coolant.

I don't have access to a VAG-COM, so i can't run any diagnostics.

Any thoughts? I was searching through the forum most of yesterday evening, and it sounds like most people that experience stalls have a rough idle first, not suddenly like I had experienced.

When mine would just quit like that and would crank over and not fire up, I had to let it sit a while and it would start fine. It ended up being a weak fuel pump. I would check out the pump and the pump relay. Should be #6 I believe.

your symptoms sound rly familiar with some1 elses a while ago. i'm guessing you're automatic since the other guy was auto. go to autozone to get your engine codes scanned. let people know where you live and maybe some1 near you could help you out

I'm up in Canada, so we don't have AutoZone, but a friend of mine at work has a code reader, and we hooked it up. No codes stored whatsoever.

It's also a 5-speed.

I'm leaning towards the fuel pump at this point.

Prolly something electrical... EPC stands for Electronic Power Control and it means that there is something wrong with your cars electronic systems. This could be a serious problem with one of your cars systems or could be as simple as bad wiring (especially if your car has any added after-market components) or just moisture in a connector.

Quick update.

Happened a second time, and was able to scan with a friend's OBD2 reader while the EPC light was still on

P0322
Ignition/Distributor
Engine speed input circuit no signal

Sounds like bad wiring or a speed sensor problem. I don't really have time wait for the part to fix it myself (since Easter is this weekend), so i'm just letting my mechanic take care of it.

Will keep updating with any results! Thanks for all the suggestions.

Crank sensor, ECU (not very likely), wiring, loose/dirty connectors (both at sensor or ECU).

that is VAG code 16706, has to do with the engine speed sensor not sending a signal. replace the engine speed sensor.

Quick follow-up for anyone who encounters this issue.

Was a faulty crank position (AKA engine speed) sensor. Replaced, has been running fine ever since
