B5 A4 30v v6 engine whine ( belt tensioner ? )
Hi - looking for a little advice before I throw parts at this. My car has a 'whine' noise. The noise seems to rise and fall with RPMs. It sound EXACTLY like this guys:
Since we have same car specs and same sound I am assuming mine is also the serpentine belt tensioner. However, I had also suspected power steering pump or alternator.
I'm looking for opinions/suggestions on further diagnosis before I start to throw $ at parts.
If it is tensioner, planning to follow these step:
How To: V6 Serpentine Belt and Tensioner Replacement
using:
Goodyear 4060740 Gatorback Poly-V Belts
Goodyear 49267 Gatorback Tensioner
but would also welcome other links/suggestions. thanks!

I'm guessing serp tensioner too. The way to tell for sure is to take off the serp belt. Then you know it's either the belt or something it turns.
There are some people out there who just sell the pulley with the bearing. If you can find one of those, there's not need to buy the rest.
I did it once without pulling the bumper out. Don't. It adds 45 minutes and a lot of swearing.

[QUOTE=normal;1487357]Thank you!
For my future reference (re bumper):
Here is better video, but note/remember he doesn't show the removal of two main bolts behind the little "grills" (which he notes in comments)

I replaced the pulley on mine without pulling the bumper. I didn't think it was so bad. I did pull the aux electric fan to make a little extra room though. I used the Dayco 89007 pulley. Should be in stock at most major parts stores.
Hi thanks for reply. What were your symptoms an did replacing pulley change/fix them?
I had a loud whine that changed with engine speed when the engine was cold. To confirm, I removed the serpentine belt. Ran the engine and no sound. Spinning each of the accessory pulleys by hand revealed the failed tensioner pulley.
