I'm kinda on the tables on what to do here. I currently have a 98 b5 with an aeb engine. I've got 2 options. I can sell the car for a couple thousand and buy a s4, or put a apr stage 3 turbo setup in it along with an apr intake and exhaust, intercooler. I can't decide. They are gonna cost about the same. So what do you guys think?

^ Agreed. I've heard some real horror stories from S4 owners but if you work with it, the 1.8T has a ton of potential, too.

 

The enigne on the 1.8t will be cheaper to build. All around speaking the s4 is a better car. was more potential. S4 has better interior, better brakes, better suspension, better engine.

 

I dont really disagree, but the amount of people who sell their A4's to buy S4's, and the amount that actually follow through with getting an S4 is a vastly different number. Spend a few grand on modding an A4 and it can be suprisingly nice. But you already know that.

 

Biggest thing about having an S4 is that if you're going to buy one, cut your teeth on an A4 first, get used to the typical issues that B5s have, learn to work on the cars, and then step up once you're sure you're willing to accept a car that has all the problems of an A4, multiplied by more extreme underhood temperatures that will bake lines, plastic parts like the afterrun coolant pump, turbo shaft seals, etc, and the fact that on a 1.8T there is one of any particular part to fail, and on the S4 there are two of each. On a 1.8T if your turbo fails, you pull it out and replace it. On the S4, when the turbos fail, you pull the engine to replace them. Things like that.

If you want a fast car, buy an Evo.

 

The A4 is going to be much cheaper to modify when it comes to the engine. You only have one turbo, one exhaust manifold, and less internal components since there are two less cylinders. It has much more room in the engine compartment so it will be easier to install and change out parts. The S4 will be more expensive in almost every way to modify and operate. If you have the money to put into an S4, I would go that route, but you need to make sure you can run and maintain it.

 

At least someone is awake here... I spent every last dollar, drop of blood, and nickbroderick's tears (i dont cry) I could muster up making my A4 what is is (which currently is a broken pile)... And my friend gets what we would call an elim kit on his evo and makes the same power and runs FASTER!

But they both blew up, so go find a nice stang and toss some gears at it.
