I have a 97 a4 quattro with the original vdo cluster.. i believe it is the first cluster that the a4 received my buddy has a 99 1.8 that has a similar looking cluster but his redline and mph slots are different. The warning signs are also in a different setup. I know that the 01 models had a digital display obc. So with all these different set up i would like to know if i could swap my cluster out with one from a 99 the plugs seem similar in the back but i know the 96, 97 a4's had slight differences than the 98 99 01 models. Also would it be possible to upgrade to a S4 speedo? Thanks

 

There is some degree of compatibility but I don't know how much. I have read though that you have to have the cluster flashed to talk to the computer though, since the gauges are ECU-driven and communication has to be synced.
