Question Bad Choice?

Hi, new member here, hoping to remain part of the community.

I've read the faq, the 2.8 faq, this, and these two threads.

I am considering this:

http://www.xceedspeed.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=140833

He wants to trade for my LS swapped turbo Civic which I've got $2600 into.
I'm waiting for him to respond:

Me: So what's wrong with the car other than the ball joint/timing cam tensioner ticking?
Do you have any maintenance receipts from the PO?
Clean title?
Thanks man
Him:Nothing wrong other than that rear ball joint and the timing tick...And the ball joint isnt even bad, the mechanic just said that i should get it done next time its in the shop...No reciepts from the PO , he was a total idiot....Anyway , its a cheap car and drives smooth so let me know, im still down for trades
Me: Alright, I'm seriously considering it, lemme think on it and I'll let you know what's up real soon. Is the title clean or rebuilt?

I really like the A4, but I'm undecided and looking for input from those who know it best. Would this trade be a bad choice? I wanna hear what you have to say.

No reciepts from the PO , he was a total idiot.
read: the car is in terrible condition. i would walk away from this one. A4's can be a money pit if you dont know what your getting. how much do you have to spend?

Brought the car into a local shop..They told me it was coming from the valve train. When they opened it up they said nothing looked out of place and the valves appear to be in good shape.
the most it needs is a timing belt change within 10,000 miles and everything will be fine..
hes not being 100% truthful about something. if the shop took the heads off and looked at the valves, they would have had to replace the timing belt when putting it all back together. if the timing belt needs to be done soon, then they didnt take it apart and inspect it. a timing belt job costs $1200 +/- if you have it done at a shop or $350 if you DIY.

Good call and thanks for the advice, I appreciate you taking the time to look through the thread.

This is pretty much what I figured, I think I just needed to hear it from someone else. I've really grown to like the A4, I currently own 4 vehicles, and have two for sale on that local forum. He wants to trade, and I think it would be so easy to have an A4 that I just wanted to do it.

Ah well, hopefully a miracle happens and someone has cash for both my cars instead of trades, so I can purchase a well maintained A4 Quattro instead.

Thanks again for reminding me about common sense, and how to use it

Pass... You can spend $1000 more and get something with records, 30k lower miles, and no body damage.

Yeah bro, I wouldn't go for this one. One, the engine seems a little shady to me, plus you seem like the kind of person that likes to mod, you won't be able to mod that 2.8, go for a 1.8T, you'll be much happier, plus that color...I'm at a loss for words, the exterior condition that car is in makes me think the engine and everything is in poor condition.

Ghost you should create a username on that forum and call out the bullshit on that post.

Yeah, I am the kind of person who likes to mod, that's why I'm looking for something stock, need a reasonable daily driver, no more fast cars with no ps/ac.

The color is pretty horrible, but it got better the more I looked at it, probably just the shape of the car itself that made me ignore the color. Like I said, I think I was just thinking impulsive/impatiently as I want to daily drive one of these soon.

As for calling out the bullshit, I figured this:

"Brought the car into a local shop..They told me it was coming from the valve train. When they opened it up they said nothing looked out of place and the valves appear to be in good shape. "

Meant they popped off the valve cover and looked at the cam/retainer/spring/top of valvetrain area. He probably never took it to the shop though, who knows.

But nonetheless, hearing someone else call out the BS here made me realize I just had stars in my eyes and this isn't really a smart choice.

I may still call him out on it, he seems like an okay (albeit shady) guy, just trying to figure out how much local drama I want to create.

Thanks again folks! The words are definately appreciated, hopefully I can sell my cars and end up sticking around.
