coil overs usually have a stiffer spring rate then stock springs and even lowering springs plus on some models you can adjust the rebound and make them even stiffer if you want to. So when people say they loose ride quality they are truly referring to comfort because the stiffer suspension means that it is not going to absorb the changes in the road as smoothly as a softer spring. But the trade off is a lower center of gravity, and since the suspension is stiffer you get less body roll, which allows you to take corners at a higher rate of speed.
So if you get some C/O's which are basically made for solely track duty, you would probably lose your teeth on a normal road, but many C/O's can work well on both track and street duties and give you increased performance with only a little loss of absorption properties, and that is what most guys here will end up buying unless they opt for lowering springs.
